Thousands of Hasidic Jews streamed into Kiryas Joel on Tuesday August 7 2018 for the annual commemoration of the death of Rabbi Joel Teitelbaum, the founder of the Satmar Hasidic movement around thwe world and namesake of the Satmar village in Orange County.
Worshippers visit Teitelbaum’s mausoleum each year on his yertzheit, or death anniversary, in the belief that his soul is present and can answer their prayers. Teitelbaum died at age 92 in 1979, two years after Kiryas Joel was created.
