Singer Don Stern, had a close relationship with the previous Skulen Rebbe, Rav Yeshaya Yaakov Portugal ZT”L. The two met in the Skverer Kollel in Montreal, Canada while Don was learning in Yeshiva, and the two formed a close bond.
In September 2024, with the Rebbe’s passing, the world felt the blow of his tremendous loss. That loss was felt closely by Don as well.
Wanting to do something with his memory of the Rebbe and the loss he feels till this day, Don decided to use his strength and the koach Hanegina. Unfortunately, Reb Yeshaya Yankel had a lot of yissurim and although he was physically weak and fragile, his mind and torah knowledge only continued to grow.
About twelve years earlier, the Rebbe needed a liver transplant. While he was waiting for the transplant recipient he composed a song.
The words of the song are
געבן צו לעבן אין גיין דיר ס׳דארף
לעבן דיין געבן דיר טוט וואס דער פאר
This translates to;
It has to enter your heart to be a giver, because the One who gave you your life is a Giver.
