Maimonides Medical Center, New York’s top-rated hospital for cardiac care, officially cut the ribbon on a new Cardiothoracic Intensive Care Unit made possible by generous community donors

Brooklyn, NY – Last week, Maimonides Medical Center cut the ribbon on a new cardio-thoracic intensive care (CTICU) unit. This modernized and expanded intensive care unit features advanced equipment and is designed to make patients and their families more comfortable while they recover from heart surgery. The enhanced unit will help serve over 1,000 patients a year who choose Maimonides for cardiac procedures. Leading community donors participated in the renovation, a $15 million project, with commitments totaling over $6.5 million to date.

Maimonides Health CEO Ken Gibbs with donors and CTICU doctors

“Maimonides is already a top destination for cardiac care, and these new and improved facilities will help us continue providing our patients top-notch care,” said Maimonides Health CEO Ken Gibbs. “New technologies and monitors mean better patient care, and improved spaces mean families can support their loved ones during recovery. I want to extend a heartfelt thank you to our generous community donors that made this possible on behalf of the entire Maimonides family and our patients.”

The ribbon cutting ceremony featured a short speaking program that included Maimonides Health CEO Ken Gibbs, Director of Cardiothoracic Surgery Dr. Greg Ribakove, and VP of Philanthropy Rabbi Heshy Augenbaum. The Karfunkel family, which dedicated the unit’s main entrance in memory of Michael Karfunkel, a former Maimonides Board member, cut the ribbon on the doors and affixed a mezuzah, officially marking the unit as complete and operating. Other major philanthropic leaders dedicated the unit’s fourteen patient rooms, and a new family and visitors lounge was dedicated through the generosity of the Stavros Niarchos Foundation (SNF).

The newly renovated CTICU, last renovated in the early 1990s, is the latest in a series of major campus improvements to upgrade, expand and improve patient experience across the hospital. The CTICU features:

An array of advanced equipment, monitors and therapies to care for patients recovering from heart surgery

Major upgrades improve efficiency and optimize the patient experience, including the installation of in-room bathrooms, better lighting, aesthetic improvements, and an overall increase in size to accommodate visiting family members

A new Family Room, designed to be an attractive space with seating and comfortable amenities where visitors may wait while the patient is being attended to, or where small groups may safely gather beyond the restricted area of the inpatient units

Fourteen private patient rooms
