Hundreds of mourners, including relatives and friends attended the funeral of 56-year-old Yigal Yehoshua at a cemetery in his family’s community of Moshav Hadid near Lod on Tuesday.

The Jewish man had died six days after allegedly being struck in the head with a brick while driving home in Lod.

Mourners carried Yehoshua’s body towards the cemetery where he was then buried.

“Yigal Yehoshua was a Jewish man who only wanted to get home safe. Unfortunately, on his way home he was hit by a stone, when he got out of his car to defend himself or to run away, the mob surrounded him and threw stones at him,” CEO of Lod municipality Aaron Atiass said.

“Our heart is with the family and with the residents of Lod that need to live with the reality of another victim of terror,” he added, hoping for country leaders to take action.

Yehoshua was allegedly beaten by Arab suspects in the mixed Arab-Jewish town last week and died in the hospital on Monday.

The riots came as violence has erupted in recent days amid protests in East Jerusalem over possible evictions of Palestinian families from the Sheikh Jarrah neighbourhood. Clashes that began at the Al-Aqsa mosque compound escalated into an exchange of rockets between the Gaza Strip and Israel.
