JOSEF GRUNWALD, RABBI, DIES AT 82

Rabbi Josef Grunwald, who transplanted the remains of a devastated Hungarian Hasidic congregation to Brooklyn after World War II and rebuilt it there, died Friday night at the Westchester County Medical Center in Valhalla after a stroke. He was 82 years old and lived in the Williamsburg section of Brooklyn.
Rabbi Grunwald was the Rebbe, or grand rabbi, of the Kehilath Yakov – Congregation of Jacob – an Orthodox Jewish group from the small Hungarian town of Pupa that now has about 10,000 to 12,000 members.
After losing his entire immediate family in the Holocaust, Rabbi Grunwald came to America shortly after the war. In Williamsburg, he set about the task of recreating the Pupa ”dynasty” begun by his grandfather.
”He gathered the remnants of his town,” said Rabbi Abraham Friedlander, who was speaking on behalf of the Pupa congregation yesterday, ”those who survived the Holocaust and tried to rebuild from the ashes, according to his dynasty, so that it should be living and flourishing again.” Building a Village
Rabbi Friedlander said Rabbi Grunwald had congregations and schools in Williamsburg, the Borough Park section of Brooklyn, Monsey, N.Y., Montreal and Jerusalem.
Rabbi Grunwald was also building Kiryas Pupa, a village for the congregation, in Westchester County, near Mount Kisco.
”Even in other rabbinical dynasties,” Rabbi Friedlander said, ”his opinion was honored on broad issues concerning Orthodox Judaism. In his sect, there was no tension. He lived peacefully with all groups. He didn’t have any confrontation with any other sect.”
A measure of his standing came in February 1980, when 5,000 Hasidim, some from Europe and Canada, gathered in Williamsburg to celebrate the wedding of Rabbi Grunwald’s son Aron.
Standing in the crowd at the time, Rabbi Erwin Ganzfried said: ”This is a second family for our Rebbe. Our Rebbe had 10 children and a wife before the war in Pupa, which is about 100 kilometers from Budapest, but after the war they were all gone.”
After the war, Rabbi Grunwald established the first Congregation Kehilath Yakov in Williamsburg, as well as his first boys’ school, Yeshivath Kehilath Yakov, and girls’ school, Bnos Yakov. From there, the Pupa community grew.
Several thousand mourners attended a funeral yesterday at the Pupa community’s national headquarters at 660 Bedford Avenue in Brooklyn. Rabbi Grunwald was buried at the village in Westchester County.
Rabbi Grunwald is survived by his wife, Miriam; three sons, Rabbi Yakov Yechezkal, who is expected to take over the dynasty, Rabbi Israel M. and Rabbi Aron, all of Brooklyn; two daughters, Mrs. Moshe Rosner of Monsey, and Mrs. Shlomo Meisels of Montreal, and a number of grandchildren.

נאכן קריג האט דער פאפא’ער רב זצ”ל פרובירט אין פאפא צוריק אויפצולעבן דעם אידישן גייסט אויפרישן די קהלה און די ישיבה, פיל פון די בחורים זענען אהין צוריק געקומען און זיך גרופירט ארום איהם, אבער זעענדיג דאס שוועריקייט פון אנהייבן דארט אלעס פונדאסניי, האט ער פארלאזט אונגארן און איז אנגעקומען קיין אנטווערפן, בעלגיע.
במשך א תקופה האט זיך דער רבי זצ”ל אויפגעהאלטן אין אנטווערפן, ובשנת תשי”א האט ער פארלאזט אנטווערפן און געקומען קיין אמעריקא. אין אמעריקא האט דער רבי פריש אויפגעבויעט מוסדות התורה והחינוך, געגרינדעט דעם גלאררייכן קהלה ‘קהלת יעקב’ פאפא, ע”ש פון אביו הגדול בעל ויגד יעקב זצ”ל.
אין די שפעטערדיגע יאהרן האט ער געגרינדעט דעם ‘קרית פאפא’ שטעטל אין וועסט-טשעסטער ניו יארק, וואו אהין ער האט ארויסגעשיקט די ישיבה, און פלעגט בכבודו בעצמו ארויספארן פארצולערנען און פארהערן די בחורים.
ביום י”ג לחודש אב תשמ”ד עלה לישיבה של מעלה, ומנו”כ בביה”ח בקרית פאפא.
