New York – In an exclusive VIN News interview, New York State Assemblyman David Weprin, the democratic candidate in the upcoming September 13th primary for Anthony Weiner’s recently vacated congressional seat, talks about several major issues affecting the Jewish community.

Painting himself as a strong ally to the Jewish community, Weprin said that if elected he would be “Israel’s strongest ally in the house” and cited his public criticism of President Obama for calling on Israel to return to pre-1967 borders. Weprin also touted his strong record for providing funding for education within the Jewish community.

Defending his support for the gay marriage bill, Weprin explained that while clearly many were not in favor of the bill, it contained provisions affording the religious community protection from being sued for refusing to perform same sex marriages or allowing adoptions by gay couples.

Meanwhile, NY 1 is reporting that Senator Joe Lieberman will officially throw his support behind Weprin on Thursday in Washington, D.C.

The assemblyman is battling Republican candidate Bob Turner in a special election scheduled for September 13.

Turner has been publicly backed by former Mayor Ed Koch for differing from President Barack Obama’s stance on Israel.
