Did you ever see a movie or video portraying Orthodox Jews in a negative light? Lately, people who have had trauma (which we know happens to members of every race, culture, and religious group) have cashed in by publishing books or movie rights to sensationalize the “ugliness and dirty laundry” of their childhood upbringing. Unfortunately, this has led some to condemn Orthodoxy and turn their backs on Hashem and Torah.

What is it actually like for a child to grow up in an orthodox environment?

I followed our two youngest children around one Sunday afternoon in Monsey, NY, and recorded their playfulness and brotherly love. This music video portrays a beautiful slice of their life, growing up in a traditional Orthodox Jewish home without the fake cinematic irony or negative religious portrayal. Just fun, adventure, and a sense of family and love. This was my upbringing as well (minus the dolphin riding and crocodile taming)! My friends were raised this same way. While this may not amount to great cinema or compelling drama, it was our reality. Being brought up in a “normal” wholesome Orthodox Jewish home was the greatest gift our parents could have given us!

The song that Luzy and Meyer are singing is my composition based on a prayer said before musaf on Shabbat. In it, ask for all good things including health, long life, good children, sustenance, and more. Amen!

האם אי פעם ראיתם סרט או סרטון המתארים יהודים אורתודוקסים באור שלילי? לאחרונה, אנשים שחוו טראומה (מה שנכון לגבי אנשים מכל הגזעים, התרבויות והדתות) , ניצלו את “הכיעור והכביסה המלוכלכת” של חינוכם בילדות לשם עשיית רווחים על ידי הוצאת ספרים או זכויות סרטים והפיכת חוויותיהם לסנסציה. למרבה הצער, זה הוביל חלק מהאנשים לגנות את האורתודוכסיה ולהפנות לה, לתורה ולהשם את עורפם.

איך זה באמת מרגיש לילד לגדול בסביבה אורתודוכסית?

יום ראשון אחד, אחר צהריים, במונסי, ניו יורק, התהלכתי אחרי שני ילדינו הקטנים וצילמתי את השובבות שלהם ואת אהבת האחים שלהם. הקליפ המוזיקלי הזה, מציג צד יפה מחייהם שבו גדלו בבית יהודי אורתודוקסי מסורתי ללא האירוניה הקולנועית המזויפת או ההצגה הדתית השלילית. פשוט כיף, הרפתקה ותחושת משפחתיות ואהבה. כך גם אני חונכתי, (ללא רכיבה על הדולפינים ואילוף התנינים)! גם חבריי גדלו וחונכו בצורה דומה. אמנם לא היה זה חומר לקולנוע משובח או לדרמה מרתקת, אבל זו הייתה המציאות שלנו. לגדול בבית יהודי אורתודוקסי בריא “ורגיל” הייתה המתנה הגדולה ביותר שהורינו יכלו להעניק לנו!

השיר שלזי ומאיר שרים, הוא הלחנה שלי המבוססת על תפילה שנאמרה לפני מוסף בשבת. בשיר, בקשו את כל הדברים הטובים, כולל בריאות, אריכות ימים, ילדים טובים, מחיה ועוד. אמן!
